A daring money-making idea transforms a young man’s life while drawing him into a complicated world of love, secrecy, business, crime and unexpected danger.
British author Joe Smalle announces the publication of Some Girls Will Some Girls Won’t, an expansive novel that blends romance, humour, family drama, entrepreneurship, crime and suspense against the culturally vibrant backdrop of Britain during the 1970s and early 1980s.
At the centre of the story is Kevin “Bubbles” Tyler, a young man whose life changes following the sudden death of his father. Left to watch his mother struggle financially, Kevin becomes determined to find a way out of poverty and provide her with the comfortable future she deserves
His opportunity arrives after he reads about an American university survey exploring attitudes toward relationships and first dates. Connecting the study with the humorous conversations he once shared with his friends at a local snooker hall, Kevin develops an unusual “secret formula.” He advertises it through adult magazines, asking readers to send money in exchange for his supposed insight.
What begins as an experimental mail-order advertisement soon produces more cash than Kevin ever imagined.
However, rapid success creates new challenges. Kevin must process increasing amounts of mail, manage unexplained income, open multiple savings accounts and keep the true nature of his business hidden from the people closest to him. His newfound wealth enables him to purchase cars, explore business opportunities, support his mother and imagine a future far beyond the limitations of his former life.
At the same time, Kevin’s personal world grows increasingly complicated. His relationships with Kathy and Debra reveal his emotional innocence, natural charm and uncertainty about love. Although his unusual business idea is based on assumptions about women and relationships, Kevin discovers that genuine affection cannot be reduced to a formula.
Running alongside Kevin’s journey is the powerful story of Albert “Tank” Daniels, a former soldier and skilled mechanic whose relationship with Linda Marshall introduces another emotional dimension to the novel. Through love, bereavement, criminal activity and the desire for justice, Tank’s path eventually connects with the violent mystery introduced at the beginning of the book.
With a wide cast of memorable characters, unexpected business ventures, romantic misunderstandings, family struggles, criminal investigations and dangerous confrontations, Some Girls Will Some Girls Won’t moves between lighthearted British humour and darker moments of tragedy and revenge.
Music also plays an important role in the novel. Songs associated with the period accompany key scenes and help recreate the social atmosphere of the era. The title itself is inspired by the popular song “Some Girls,” which Kevin and his friends regularly play during their Sunday afternoons at the snooker hall.
Beyond its entertaining plot, the novel explores ambition, grief, loyalty, social mobility, personal reinvention, secrecy, morality and the unpredictable consequences of seemingly simple decisions. It asks whether financial success can truly solve personal problems and what happens when an innocent idea grows beyond its creator’s control.
