More than 140 works spanning six decades celebrate Hockney’s legacy and bold experimentation in printmaking, photography, video, and new media.
TAMPA, FL, UNITED STATES, September 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Tampa Museum of Art will present “David Hockney: Perspective Should Be Reversed, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation,” from September 24, 2026, through February 28, 2027. Opening a little more than three months after Hockney’s death on June 11 at age 88, the exhibition offers Tampa Bay audiences a timely opportunity to celebrate his legacy and experience the extraordinary range of his ideas across six decades.
The exhibition brings more than 140 prints, collages, photographs, and iPad drawings to Tampa. Intimate portraits, sunlit swimming pools, theatrical designs, expansive landscapes, and lively interiors reveal Hockney’s curiosity, humor, and constant inventiveness.
Throughout his career, Hockney worked with etching, lithography, Polaroid collage, office copiers, photography, video, iPhones, and iPads. His explorations of perspective, movement, memory, and time challenged the traditional rules of one-point perspective and opened new possibilities for creating images. His portraits of friends, family members, and partners brought emotional intimacy to contemporary art, while his honesty about his life expanded the stories and relationships represented in museums.

A Private Collection Serving the Public
The exhibition also demonstrates the important role collectors can play in expanding public access to art. Jordan D. Schnitzer established the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation in 1997 to make works from his collection available to the public. The Foundation has since organized more than 180 exhibitions with over 130 museums, helping institutions introduce important artists to students and communities that might otherwise have limited access.

The exhibition is organized in five sections: On Stage and Page; Interiors and Exteriors; Tradition and Innovation; Ordinary Objects and Extraordinary Renderings; and Portraits of Self and Others.
The Tampa Museum of Art will hold a public, ticketed opening celebration on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Guests will be among the first in Tampa Bay to see the exhibition before it opens to the public on September 24. Ticket details are available at TampaMuseum.org.
The exhibition is organized by the Honolulu Museum of Art in cooperation with the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. It is curated by Catherine Whitney, Director of Curatorial Affairs, and Katherine Love, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
